How Stripe fees work
Stripe's standard pricing for US businesses is 2.9% + 30¢ for each successful payment with a domestic card. On a $50 payment the fee is $1.75 and you keep $48.25.
Some cards cost more. According to Stripe's pricing page, these add to the 2.9%:
- +0.5% for manually entered cards, so 3.4% + 30¢
- +1.5% for international cards, so 4.4% + 30¢
- +1% if currency conversion is needed, so 5.4% + 30¢ for an international card in another currency
Manual entry is charged per payment, not per card. Stripe's support page says that if you type a card into the Dashboard to start a subscription, only the first payment is charged 3.4% + 30¢. Later payments on that card are charged the standard 2.9% + 30¢.
Stripe charges the fee on the amount you charge the customer, so tax or shipping you include in the payment is part of it. Stripe rounds each fee to the nearest cent: a fee of $0.025 becomes $0.03.
Other Stripe fees
- In person (Stripe Terminal): 2.7% + 5¢ for domestic cards.
- ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, capped at $5.00.
- Instant Payouts: 1.5% of the payout, minimum 50¢.
This calculator covers online card payments. Instant Payouts are charged when you pay out, not per payment, so they aren't included.
How to pay less on Stripe
- Avoid typing in card numbers. Manual entry costs 0.5% more than a card the customer enters online.
- Price in your customer's currency only when you need to. Currency conversion adds 1%.
- For large invoices, offer ACH. 0.8% capped at $5 is far cheaper than 2.9% + 30¢ on big amounts.
Refunds
Stripe keeps its fees when you refund. The pricing page says: "The payment processing, Connect and currency conversion fees from the original transaction are not returned." So if you refund a $100 domestic card payment in full, you are $3.20 down. The same applies to the extra 1.5% and 1% on international and converted payments.
